  • My Story | Perezcrespo

THIS IS WHO I AM I was born in Sleepy Hollow, New York. I grew up and attended public school in Miami, where I later earned a Bachelor's in Journalism and Communications, an MBA in International Management and Sales Strategies, and a certificate in HR Management from Florida International University. I'm a Emmy Award-winning multi-media professional with over 30 years of experience leading projects across the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and Brazil. As a former U.S. Federal Government Supervisor at the United States Agency for Global Media, I helped create content for the people in Cuba that bypassed censorship. I also earned my Contracting Officer's Representative (FAC-COR) Level I Certification, enabling me to research, develop, and manage vendors and contractors—a vital skill to have in Council when contracting services come before the city. I've served as Past President of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and WLRN. I am a member of the Miami Springs Historical Society and an active member of the GFWC Miami Springs Woman's Club, where I serve as Historian, Co-Chair the House committee, and form part of the Finance committee. In Scouting, I served as Cubmaster, and currently serve as the Charter Organization Representative between Grace Lutheran Church and Cub Scout Pack 425 and Scout Troop 334, mentor youth as a Merit Badge Counselor, and earned my Wood Badge leadership award. I'm also a Staff Writer and Photographer for the River Cities Gazette, which allows me great opportunities to connect and talk to our residents about everyday issues they're passionate about. As Founder and President of Find Your Focus, I'm a Master Certified Life Coach helping young adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) discover their purpose and achieve their goals. OUR HOME'S HISTORY On a sunny spring day in 2006, my wife, Milly, and I purchased a home in Miami Springs, where Milly had attended high school. Captivated by the lush vegetation, unique architecture, and small-town charm, we chose a modest house built in 1941 on the busy but pedestrian-friendly Curtiss Parkway and Morningside Drive. During our first yard sale, we learned about the history of our new home from an elderly woman named Dorothy. She shared the story of Ernest and Frances Fort, the original owners who resided there until 1991. A quick online search led me to contact Mr. Fort, who, at the age of 103, was under care at Epworth Village Retirement Center in Hialeah. When I introduced myself as the new house owner, Mr. Fort, lying on his medical bed, remarked, "That's a solid house." Over the following months, we visited Mr. Fort and learned about his remarkable life. He was an engineer with the City of Miami, a distinguished veteran who served as the Military Governor of Korea, and a lifelong member of the Miami Temple Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Mahi Shrine Temple. He also served on the Miami Springs Zoning and Planning Board for over 31 years, where decisions about city development were often hotly contested. Mr. Fort was credited with opposing the establishment of big-box stores in Miami Springs. After Mr. Fort's passing, his family generously donated all documents, photos (Including his honeymoon in Havana photos), ledgers, and some original furniture related to our house. This truly remarkable piece of history is now in our possession. Like the Forts, we firmly believe in preserving the spirit of community, volunteerism, and public service in our city.
